Globalisation and the Epigenetic Landscape
نویسنده
چکیده
One of the most inspirational books by Tony McMichael has been Human Frontiers, Environments and Disease. In the present chapter, I expand on some of the thoughts that book put forward. There are a few good examples of how environmental changes have modified the genetic make-up of some populations. It is likely, however, that much more important changes have taken place and will take place in humankind’s epigenetic landscape, i.e. acquired and transgenerationally transmissible changes in DNA expression. A mounting body of evidence on the importance of epigenetic changes related, for instance, to in utero dietary exposures or deficiencies is now available. The past 30–40 years have seen unprecedented modifications in markets, industrial food availability and other aspects of lifestyle. Is it plausible that these changes could have an enduring effect on humankind’s epigenetic landscape? In this chapter, I review some of the existing evidence. In Human Frontiers, Environments and Disease (McMichael, 2001), McMichael describes in a wonderful way the interplay between human evolution and environmental changes. This chapter is a tribute to that book, with reference to some recent developments in epigenetics that I believe are consistent with Tony’s original ideas.

Genetic and Epigenetic landscape of Germline Stem Cells
Elucidating the critical epigenetics events involved in differentiation and reprogramming of cells to primordial germ cells (PGCs) is among the interesting issues in stem cell research. Here, I will talk about critical transcription factors and global hypomethylation in development of germ cells. Evidence strongly suggests that the earliest PGCs emerging in the E7.25 mouse embryo epiblast have...
متن کاملOnm-19: Role of Epigenetic in Transgenerarional Disease
Epigenetic alterations have been related to many biological processes and disease; however, the global epigenetic status of most cell types has not been investigated yet in detail. The ability of environmental factors to promote a phenotype or disease state not only in the individual exposed but also in subsequent progeny for successive generations is termed transgenerational inheritance. The m...
متن کاملIs Globalisation Sustainable?
It is clear that globalisation is something more than a purely economic phenomenon manifesting itself on a global scale. Among the visible manifestations of globalisation are the greater international movement of goods and services, financial capital, information and people. In addition, there are technological developments, more international cultural exchanges, facilitated by the freer trade ...

This article deals with the discourse of cultural globalisation and related issues such as the global market and cultural industry, which emerged as recent seminal factors within the context of Iranian culture, art and artistic practice during the recent history of Iran. Moreover, it seeks to explore the inevitable issues drawn from the process of globalisation, namely the forces of standar...
متن کاملEpigenetic Inheritance across the Landscape
The study of epigenomic variation at the landscape-level in plants may add important insight to studies of adaptive variation. A major goal of landscape genomic studies is to identify genomic regions contributing to adaptive variation across the landscape. Heritable variation in epigenetic marks, resulting in transgenerational plasticity, can influence fitness-related traits. Epigenetic marks a...
